ARTIST STATEMENT POINTERS

In general an artist statement is like the introduction to a book that presents information about WHY you make your art and what it represents, HOW you make it and WHAT it means to you. It should be written in  an accessible language for people who want to know more about what they see.

An effective statement provides  another entry into the experience of  your art through language. You will need a statement for most applications, press releases, websites, galleries and grad school.  It is essential to your practice and like your art work will get better the more you do it.
Your statement should be engaging and short. One paragraph or around 200 words should do it.
Some things consider:

Avoid using I and me too often throughout the statement.
Don't say" I'm trying to or want to".. Just say it and be precise.
Don't tell the reader what they should see, just say what you see.
Don't get a bio mixed up with a statement.
Write your statement and put it away for a bit and then look at it again.
Always get a second opinion.
Read it out loud.
It's about you so personalize it.
what is it about your work which sets it apart.
Be clear, use plain English.
Don't talk down or try to dress it up; if you know what I mean.
Say what you see in the physical qualities that may reference the content.
Is there a relationship between the media you work with and the ideas you work with?
The words should match the work: poetic, satirical ,comical, etc.
What ties your individual pieces into a practice?
Is there an intention behind the work? What do yo want it to achieve?
What about the processes, themes, outside influences and ideas?

Stick to your subject, which is your practice. The purpose of an artist statement is to talk in a focused way about your practice.

Write in an engaging way.
Your statement should be fresh, professional and accessible.
Always use spell check and pay attention to sentence structure (ex: avoid run on sentences)

The best thing you can do for your writing is also the best thing you can do for your practice - just keep at it.

Please send me your artist statement for Tuesday March 17th by Internet.
These statements will be proofread and discussed in class by everyone on March 31, and final statements are due April 7th.
